Subject: [*] abalone-13; a board game
Abalone for the Macintosh supports two- and three-player games.
Each of the players can be a human player, the Mac or a net player.
A net player can either be a remote human player or a remote Mac.
You can play abalone almost any way you can think of, for example:
- solitaire against your Mac
- a three-player network game
- in 'demo' mode (Mac vs. Mac [vs. Mac])
- in 'Turing Test' mode: try to guess which of the two net players
is the remote human player, and which the Power Macintosh 9100/200.
Changes since version 1.1:
- Native on Power Macintoshes.
- Added network play option.
- recoded my favourite strategy in assembly.
- nicer graphics for color Mac owners.
- minor bug fixes.
Requirements:
Any Mac running System 7.x (6.x won't do), min. 200k free RAM.
(two of these Macs and some cabling for network play.)
For those who don't know about Abalone:
Abalone is a board game for two (usually) or more players.
The original game is played on a nice-looking hexagonal board
with coloured marbles on it.
The object of the game is to push off your opponents marbles, much
like a sumo wrestler tries to push his opponent out of the ring.
You may only push your opponents marbles in a certain direction
if you are 'stronger', that is you have more marbles lined up.

Subject: [*] Alice 2.4E final; a mail reader
This archive contains the final English version of Alice v2.4. A number of
bug fixes in the final version pertain to the BlueWave setup and to T2
(1.0.1 is included in the archive). T2 now works correctly on the SE/30,
imports messages automatically, and supports message bases of up to 8MB.
Integration with the freeware mailer "Charon" and the decompression utility
"ZipIt" has been greatly simplified for Macintosh FidoNet point setups.
Alice can function either as an offline .QWK, .XRS, or BlueWave FidoNet
mail reader, or Alice may be combined with Charon and ZipIt to form a
seamless FidoNet point setup for the Macintosh platform. Alice is shareware
- $15.

Subject: [*] ARA-Zoom 28.8 Script
The files enclosed are ARA scripts for the new Zoom 28.8kbs modem.
(I think the Magic modems are made by Zoom Telephonics as well and should be
compatible).
The Zoom VFX V.Fast script attempts to link at 28.8 bps and should
automatically fall
back to the fastest speed possible depending on the line quality. I have
found that it
is not possible to reliably use 28.8 bps on my phone system, so I have
included several
other scripts that will force a connection at the baud rate specified.
(24000 baud
seems to work the best for me).
All the scripts use 38,400 baud to communicate with the modem and error
correction/data compression are turned off.

Aspire is a very elegant typeface great for logos, headlines,
brochures, invitations, etc. I created both Type 1 and TrueType
versions for your pleasure. Personally I think the Type 1
version is suited for more applications, especially if you want
to convert it to outlines in a draw program. It's very similar
to a commerical typeface with the exception it costs much less.
It's slightly boldfaced and ideal for printing above 48pts.

Asymptote v1.0 Demo
This is the demonstration version of Asymptote, the professional
Macintosh graph-processor designed specifically for scientists
and engineers. Asymptote creates publication-quality graphs
with a minimum of effort and its easy to use scripting language
can fully automate your graph graph-making. Asymptote also
supports advanced Macintosh features such as QuickTime and
Publish & Subscribe.
This demo contains the Asymptote application, demo scripts,
on-line help file, product brochure and order form. Certain

BatteryMinder is a tiny program that helps you predict how much time you
have left on your PowerBook battery. It allows you to toggle Appletalk and
Sound with convenient buttons in its unobtrusive little window and is smart

Subject: [*] Checksum 1.1.1; a file verification utility
Wouldn't it be nice to know that the file you downloaded is what it
should be? How about a way to check whether your files have changed
over time without you knowing it?
Here is Checksum for the Macintosh, version 1.1.1. Checksum is the
ultimate Macintosh application for calculating checksums for a file.
This utility is fully compatible with the Unix(tm) "sum" program (and
the POSIX "cksum" program), and the RSA MD5. It can be used to verify
that files transferred between machines match. It is even smart
enough to translate end-of-line characters between Unix, MS-DOS and
Macintosh 'TEXT' files. Checksum is the easiest way to compare files
on the Macintosh, either on the same system or on different machines.
You can even use it to compare performance of different systems.
Fully System 7 and 32-bit addressing compatible, including balloon
help and "drag and drop" capability. It will run under either System
6 or System 7 on a Mac Plus or higher, including the new PowerMacs.
This version 1.1.1 maintenance release corrects two very minor bugs
related to preferences.
Checksum is business-ware: it is freeware for personal use on a single
CPU and for educational institutions for instructional uses, but it is
shareware ($5) for use in a business, corporation, organization or
government. Site license information is also included.
This file can be distributed in software collections, such as CD-ROMs
and on-line systems.

Subject: [*] Enhanced; a game
SophistiChaos Game Design proudly presents:
Enhanced
The first part of the Cyberventure trilogy (soon to be followed by
Sensorer and Icebreaker).
Enhanced is a science fiction text adventure set in a cyberpunk
environment, complete with your first opportunity to experience
cyberspace.
As Enhanced begins, you are trying to survive yet another day in the
big city with no money, no job and no hope. Walking down the street
in the government research project area, you suddenly see a sign that
you haven't seen before.
"Volunteers needed for military research project!
Do you want to make money?
Do you want to help your country?
Can you start at once?
No special skills needed.
Enter here."
Since you think that all of the items on the list fit you perfectly,
especially the part about needing money, you enter the door indicated
on the sign and sign up to be a research subject.
You have to fill out and sign a multitude of forms, asking you about
all sorts of things from what grades you had in school to if you have
any friends or relatives who know where you are. Once you finish all
the boring paperwork you are lead through a lot of white-painted
corridors, all alike. Finally, you emerge in what looks like a
surgery. You are made to lie down on an operating table where you are
tied down and covered with green cloth. You see a plastic mouthpiece
being lowered down over your mouth and you feel yourself floating
away...
When you come to, you find that some things about you have changed.
You also find that the people doing the research seem to regard you as
some kind of prototype, not a human being. Perhaps it would be good
for your health if you could get out of this mess...
Enhanced is shareware ($10) and runs on Macintosh, PC and various
flavors of Unix. If you register your copy, we will send you a
diskette with the latest release of Enhanced, a booklet with hints to
help you complete the game and also the complete TADS 2.1 source to
the game.

Subject: [*] File Tracker: a file/folder watching utility
File Tracker is a utility package that "Watches" files or
folders on your hard drive, or on other people's hard drives
over a network. File Tracker is unique in that it can detect
exactly what happened when a watched folder or file changes.
It can detect seperately, for example, files arriving in a
folder or files being renamed, and perform actions on the
files involved. A wide range of events are recognized.
File Tracker offers a large library of built-in, pre-fab
actions that it can take in response to events, but also ties
in closely with AppleScript so you can write your own responses.
Example scripts and a few scripting additions are provided.
File Tracker is ShareWare $15US/$20Cnd, but is fully
functional "out of the box" and includes a full manual. It has
been extensively beta-tested and is compatible with all Mac
models. FILE TRACKER REQUIRES SYSTEM 7 OR BETTER.

the game is to put 5 or more consecutive stones of same kind along lines or

What is it?
It's yet another screen-saver. All this saver does is to 'dim' the
screen using the video hardware. This is quite a nice effect on RGB
screens. It might be awful on LCD screens like on various PowerBooks,
and it might be awful on monochrome screens. I haven't seen it on a
grey-scale screen, but I suspect it might work as nicely as on an RGB

GLMStat is a statistical program for analysing generalised linear models.
It provides a macintosh interface but otherwise operates in a similar
fashion to GLIM but with less features (most of which you probably won't
miss). Features of GLMStat are
- spreadsheet style data entry
- Normal, Poisson, Binomial and Gamma models with appropriate links and
specification of convergence parameters
- Scatter and Residual plots
- Output of deviance, parameter estimates, residuals and parameter
correlations
- Saving of data files complete with all model specifications.
- printing of data, graph and results.
- Online Help (under the apple menu) unfortunately there is currently no
other documentation.
- includes example data files for most examples in two of the texts.
The programme is shareware with a very reasonable fee of $AUD30 for
individual copies or $AUD120 for site licences. ($1AUD is
approximately $US0.70 if the Australian economy hasnt collapsed by
the time you read this (only joking, I hope)). Further details in
the "read me" file.
This program is fully functional but will revert to a DEMO
version in September.
This version of GLMStat (1.1.3) has the following changes
- Fixed bug when using add * in Fit dialog caused some terms in
model to be missed (this did not affect the results other than
to cause some parameter names to be slightly different than the
accepted ones)

Program: KeyQuencer 1.01
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini (lmontalcini@pmn.it)
Keywords: Macro engine, control panel, utility
Price: $10 cash (shareware)
WARNING: WORKING WITHOUT KEYQUENCER CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH
KeyQuencer is a powerful and solid macro engine designed to use very little
memory; it can perform complex tasks that are invoked by a single keystroke.
KeyQuencer uses a very simple scripting approach and can be extended through
external extensions. The 30 bundled extensions provide lots of power and can
replace many common system additions with substantial memory savings.
KeyQuencer's macros can also be invoked from HyperCard and from AppleScript.
This is the first macro engine that's released as shareware. It is better
than commercial packages in many ways, and it only costs $10. Don't miss it.
Changes in version 1.01:
- improved compatibility with WorldScript II and non-roman script systems
(Japanese users should enable the WorldScript II work-around in the Prefs).
- fixed a bug that caused crashes when editing a macro on Japanese systems
and other unusual system configurations I couldn't test before.
- improved the Click extension.

This is MaXClock, a small xclock(1) like analog clock for the Macintosh.
I've tried to keep the program small, with little memory requirements.
It is resizable, and remembers its position and colour settings.
MaXClock draws using an off-screen bitmap (for smoother graphics) if
there is enough memory available. So, if you want MaXClock to have
smooth graphics for bigger window sizes, you'll have to give it more
memory. If there is not enough memory available MaXClock won't use an
off-screen bitmap, but draw directly into its window.

to do this since the new version ignores the old machine file format.

* Changed machine file location method (now uses Gestalt IDs)
* Fixed SoundManager 3.0 bug

Our previous memory management utility, HeapIt, introduced MP
Classic users to a new way to free up more of their heap space. They
could install more packages, use more applications, and even back up
their MessagePads when they couldn't before.
ICS is proud to announce NewtCase, our latest memory management
utility for the Newton. NewtCase lets any MessagePad (Classic, MP100,

requirements, alleviate conflicts between applications, and clean up
his/her Extras drawer. Archived (or "NewtCased") applications do not
show up in the Extras drawer, but can be reinstalled at any time using
NewtCase.
With NewtCase, you can temporarily deinstall applications without
having to remove them from your MessagePad. You could even keep a
hundred applications on your 4 meg card without overflowing your heap
space or Extras drawer.
NewtCase will be available by June 1st on CompuServe (GO NEWTON),
America Online (GO PDA), the comp.binaries.newton newsgroup, and the major
Newton ftp sites. If you cannot locate a copy, you can have one e-mailed
to you. Send all requests to ics@indirect.com.

Subject: [*] Revelations 1.07; a relational database management system
This version (1.07) of Re(ve)lations REPLACES ALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS!!
What is Re(ve)lations?
A very simple - but VERY EASY TO USE - relational database management system.
Features:
-> A basic set of relational algebra operations, which can be nested to
produce complex queries.
-> A graphical query language specially developed for Re(ve)lations. No
support for character-based queries (e.g. queries in SQL format) - and good
riddance to them!
-> Access to multiple databases at the same time.
-> Data import and export in tab-delimited format.
-> Multi-user architecture.
Re(ve)lations version 1.07 may be included on the info-mac CD-ROM or on any
other non-profit CD-ROM.
Re(ve)lations Version History:
1.05 First public release.
1.06 Recompiled for compatibility with the PowerMac Modern Memory Manager
Improved compatibility with two-byte characters (Japanese, etc).
(Attribute names should still be written with 1-byte characters.)
1.07 Fixed bugs (some fatal, SORRY...!) introduced in version 1.06.
Improved handling of 'enter' and 'tab' key input in spread sheets.
Improved compatibility with two-byte characters (Japanese, etc).
Known bugs:
* A True Type version of Times must be available for the manual to be
displayed correctly.
* The cells in a Query spread sheet can be edited, but changes will be
lost. (This is an 'intentional' bug -- maybe you want to edit the values a
little before you select them and paste them into a spread sheet or word
processing application.)
* Deleting tuples is done using a spread sheet interface -- a better
interface will be provided in the next version.
* The manual is too technically oriented. I will try to improve the manual
as soon as I have some free time...!
Future plans:
I have a lot of suggestions and requests for improvements, as well as some
ideas of my own. Please let me know what you want. You might find it in the
next version!

< Overview >
SleepAid covers all aspects of power management on your Newton
(Classic, MP100, MP110 or German MP). It replaces the default "Sleep"
preferences allowing you to set two sleep times - one for battery and one
for AC. It lets you reboot or sleep your Newton even if some errant
application wants it to stay awake. And finally, it adds a SleepAidNow
corner for one tap sleep and a HeapStatus corner for an instant reading
of free heap space. SleepAid is not a radical change from the existing
interface. It adds functionality without complexity and implements sleep
the way it should have been in the first place. :-)

SpeakAlert is a control panel/system extension that uses the Speech
Manager to speak the text in alerts. The control panel allows you to
choose the desired voice and to turn SpeakAlert off or on. SpeakAlert
requires that the Speech Manager or PlainTalk TTS system extensions are
installed on your machine (either or both). It allows you to use the
MacInTalk voices (Boris, RoboVox and the others) as well as the Gala Tea
voices (TTS Male voice and the others).
Version 1.0.4 provides some bug fixes, and support for the alerts from
some programs that it didn't support in earlier versions, like Photoshop.

Subject: [*] Symantec C++ 7.0.2 Updates
This package contains the "SC++ 7.0.2 Update.sea" updater. See the list
below to determine which updater you need to download.
Symantec C++ 7.0.2 Update Overview
Copyright (c) 1994 Symantec Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
Introduction
This file is an overview of the Symantec C++ 7.0.2 update, detailing the
various update options available to you. Which archive you need depends on
which product you're updating:
Symantec C++ for Macintosh
We have packaged the update in different ways to limit the number of
extraneous components you need to download. There are two archives
available:
1) SC++ 7.0.2 Update.sea
This is the full update, including patches for the THINK Project
Manager, THINK Debugger, the translators, the runtime libraries
(these four components are collectively called the "Essential
Development Set"), Visual Architect, VA Macro Files, and
THINK Class Library.
2) EDS 7.0.2 Update.sea
This contains just the "Essential Development Set" update. It does
*not* include the VA or TCL updates. If you used the 6.0.x => 7.0
online update to come up to version 7.0 or if you have the full 7.0
product but don't use the Visual Architect or the THINK Class Library
then you only need to download this package.
Symantec C++ for MPW
SC/SCpp 7.0.2 Update.sea
This contains patches for both the SC and SCpp compilers.
Symantec C++ for Power Macintosh CDK
CDK 7.0.2 Update.sea
This contains a patch for the PowerPC C++ translator which brings it
in line with the 68K 7.0.2 release. We recommend installing the full
Symantec C++ for Macintosh 7.0.2 update in addition to this patch so
that you will get the latest version of the TCL.
A Note About Version Numbers
All components except the C++ compilers are version 7.0.1. Pre-release
versions of the 7.0.1 C++ compiler were included on the Symantec Developers
Advantage CD. The compiler underwent a couple of minor modifications after
the CD was mastered and the version number bumped to 7.0.2. As such this
patch is called the 7.0.2 update. The next patch release will use a
consistent version number across all components.
The C++ compiler patches included in the above archives will update either
the 7.0 or pre-release 7.0.1 compilers.

Constitution of 1787. Alexander Hamilton was the originator and author of
fifty-one essays, James Madison wrote twenty-six essays and John Jay wrote
five essays. When the essays were published in The Independent Journal and
other New York newspapers, they were attributed to "Publius", referring to
Publius Valerius Publicola, a great defender of ancient Rome. Thomas

Subject: Geoport Madness
Here's an interesting one. Part of the story has been on the
list before, so I'll be brief.
1. Had two perfectly functioning GeoPorts, but they were the old
type that were defective in manufacturing.
2. While Apple was willing to do an open swap, I had the two old
Geoports replaced with new units. (The ones with the nice little
dot.)
3. Immediately, after replacing the old for the new Geoports,
my AppleLink software running on a Quadra 840av reported
connections to AppleLink at 14.4 kbps instead of 9.6 kbps
as it reported on the old Geoport.
4. A one after installation, the new Geoport began making a
loud, humming noise whenever I attempted to use fax. Of course,
this really fouled up the fax and modem connections.
5. Replaced the new Geoport with a second, new Geoport. Now
the buzzing is gone, but AppleLink now reports connects
at 9.6 kbps again.
Go figure!

Subject: NewtCase 0.9B WARNING - problems backing up/restoring
I am posting this message for my partner, the author of NewtCase. Users
have found a potential problem with backing up and restoring a Newton
MessagePad with archived apps. This message details the problem.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
here's the scoop on Newtcase 0.9 beta and backing up..
NewtCased applications are "hidden" from the Newton. Therefore, they will NOT
be backed up if you make a backup. Think of NewtCased apps as being physically
removed from the Newt, except that you do not have to hook up to a PC to get
them back. However, because the NewtCase soup (and its list of NewtCased apps)
WILL be backed up, a restore will definitely confuse NewtCase as to what exists
and what doesn't (the list would be restored, but the actual apps would not).
Synchronizing with the Connection kit does not seem to be a problem, because it
does not try to restore items that are "missing" from or different on the
Newt.
The current beta version of NewtCase is not prepared to handle the exception of
a NewtCase soup that does not agree with the actual apps installed. Therefore,
if you restore your Newt (and an old NewtCase soup with it), use a soup utility
to delete the NewtCase soup from the affected store (ie; the internal or the
card). The list of NewtCased apps is stored on the same store as the app, so
restoring a Newton alone will have no effect on NewtCased apps on a card.
Most users will be using NewtCase to archive apps installed on a storage card
(this is how it was intended). A backup or restore to the Newton device (no
storage card installed) will leave the informatin on the card (and thus, any
NewtCased apps on the card) intact.
Bottom line: Applications in your NewtCase are "not" installed on your Newt,
therefore they will not be backed up.
Hope this explanation helps..
Dan Rowley, author of NewtCase

A sidebar: THIS APPLICATION IS STILL A BETA! No, we don't expect it to fail -
we've used it more than we care to discuss.. BUT, users in the 'real world'

Subject: PowerMac: a true DOS alternative ?
Ok, the PowerMacs are here, but are they worth their price, for use in an
office environment ?
That was, basically, the question my boss made me, regarding plans to do a
large purchase of computing equipment for our campus. He is practically
sold on the idea of forgetting the DOS world, and purchasing exclusively
PowerMacs, but there are a couple of questions remaining:
* Do we have to buy something extra for networking ? (Correct me if I'm wrong,
but the PowerMacs have ethernet built-in; you only buy the transceiver
appropiate for your cabling setup).
* Do most popular DOS programs run without problems on the DOS emulator ?
* Can you have access to Novell network services (fileservers, BTrieve
applications, etc.) that are currently being run on DOS machines ? This
would include locally developed network applications that run on our
Novell servers.
* Are the machines (6100, 7100, 8100) as reliable and trusty as the DOS
machines ? In other words, can they take a licking and keep on ticking ?
Your comments, tips, war stories, etc., will be greatly appreciated.

I handle all the microcomputers in the Office of Admissions at the
University of Minnesota. We use Microsoft Word for word processing.
I looked around for a long time when I needed some scriptability in a word
processor for some automatic report/letter production (serious
scriptability in a serious word processor!). What I found was WordPerfect
3.x. It is fantastic - you can script almost ANYthing. What you can't
script you can write a macro for using its very nice macro language - then
you can call the macro from your AppleScript!
I highly recommend it.
Microsoft Word 6.0 appears to be "not an option" for us as some of our
machines still have only 4MB of RAM and it sounds like 6.0 is going to need
more than 3MB (I'm not sure if it'll be scriptable). WordPerfect likes to
have 1800k.
